Thank you for taking part in our annual Christmas business survey.  Here, as promised, are the results.

Taking the industry as a whole it seems to have been a fairly neutral year, despite Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday.  Across the country there were as many who felt that business was better than last year as felt that it wasn't so good. Overall the average order value was up on last year.

The most significant result was that, overall, relay members felt that they didn't get nearly as many orders as they had been expecting.

Generally florists expect Valentine's business to be reasonable and they are mostly optimistic about 2018 as a whole.

The full results are shown in the tables below.

I wish you all good business for Valentine's Day, and the rest of the year.

Grant McGowan
Managing Director

The detailed results (based on 249 responses) are below

BusinessSurveys/Christmas2017Q1.jpg

As you can see, the overall picture is very balanced, with one in three considering that business was not as good as they had expected, one in three thinking it was just as expected, and one in three feeling that they did better than they had expected.  In total 80% responded in the centre between slightly better to slightly worse.  Only one in five was at the more extremes of much better or much worse.

Again, overall, the picture is balanced, with as many considering business better than last year as thinking that it fell short of the previous year.  Most people fell into the middle ground with 78% responding between slightly better and slightly worse.

BusinessSurveys/Christmas2017Q3.jpg

Overall average order value was considered by more people to be up on last year, with 42% thinking it higher than last year versus only 16% thinking it had gone down.  Again the greatest proportion, 43%, felt that it was much the same as last year.

BusinessSurveys/Christmas2017Q7.jpg

This is the most significant result of our survey, where the response to other questions about Christmas business showed a balanced picture across the country, with most florists in the centre and little at either extreme of up or down.  Here the picture is very clearly negative with 68% of relay members feeling that the number of orders they received through relay was down, with 37% saying much worse than they had expected, compared to only 12% who felt that they had received more orders than they had expected.

Again the overall picture is one of balance, with the biggest group of 49% simply feeling that this Valentine's would be much the same as last year.  Only a total of 9% said that they expected it to be either much better or much worse than last year.
